Dedication to Education

The growing awareness of malnutrition, and the interest of the different individuals to learn and improve their craft are the reasons why the Philippine Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (PhilSPEN) continues its legacy of enriching knowledge and provide the foundations for the Nutrition Support Teams around the country.

The Dedication to Education Programme (DEP) Committee is tasked to prepare the courses to suit the needs of the different professions and their teams.

Our Dedication to Education Program offers four Basic Nutrition Support (BNS) courses for Doctors, Dietitians, Nurses, and Pharmacists. For advanced courses, we have tied up with ESPEN to offer Life Long Learning (LLL) Program modules.

In the pursuit of mentoring Nutrition Support Teams around the country, we also have the Basic Nutrition Support for Teams (BNST) and the BNST 1:1, where a chosen PhilSPEN mentor will facilitate monthly workshops for the hospital NST.

Basic Nutrition Support Festival

Quezon City
September 21, 2019

The second BNS Festival was held in La Breza Hotel, Quezon City, last September 21, 2019. This is within the National Capital Region, where the most number of hospitals are located in the country. The runs was spearheaded by Ms. Dianne Sy.

The Basic Nutrition Support Festival is composed of lectures and specialized workshops. In the morning, four plenary sessions were held on the following topics by esteemed speakers: The Nutrition Support Team by Dr. Olive Quizon, The Diagnosis of Malnutrition by Dr. Frances Gail Turralba , Enteral Nutrition by Dr. Regina Bagsic, and Parenteral Nutrition by Dr. Reynaldo Sinamban. The important roles of each member in the team were highlighted.

In the afternoon, the groups were divided according to their disciplines, conducted by sixteen PhilSPEN facilitators for the eleven stations. The workshops for doctors were composed of two cases which included management of a medical and surgical patient. The workshops for dietitians were composed of three rotating stations: the nutrition support process, enteral nutrition formula selection and parenteral nutrition computation. For the nurses, the rotations included screening for adult patients, enteral nutrition computation for pediatric patients, and parenteral nutrition computation as well. Finally, for the pharmacists, they performed the nutrition support process, identification of drug nutrient interaction, and parenteral nutrition compounding.

It was very fruitful for those who were able to share their expertise, as well the attendees who had a hands-on encounter in the festivals. We hope to continue this course and bring the same experience to the current and future PhilSPEN members.
